I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field from a young age. I was a Pre-med/Psychology major in college at Tulane, looking forward to a career hopefully as a doctor. Throughout college, I was a Peer Health Educator, going to dorms, sorority houses and organizations educating my fellow students on important topics such as drug and alcohol abuse and addiction, eating disorders and safe sex.
My senior year of college I did an internship at an OB/GYN office here in Houston who was visionary in bringing in Certified Nurse Midwives to join the practice. Those midwives, with their kind, gentle, holistic approach to medical care, inspired me. The relationships they cultivated with their patients combined with their skill and expertise in such a meaningful field motivated me to alter my course and pursue a career as a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife). I joined that practice I interned at and worked there for 10 years in various roles, while I advanced my education. I received a degree in Public Health, focusing on Health Education, and obtained degrees and certifications as both an RN (Registered Nurse) and a CNM, a type of Advanced Practice Nurse.
When my second child was born, I decided to become a stay-at-home mom. During this time I also cared for my wonderful mom who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Sadly, she had an aggressive form of the disease. One of the most powerful and rewarding experiences of my life was taking care of my mom in the last months of her life. It was an honor and a privilege. It was sad, but beautiful. I went on to have a third child, named after my sweet mom.
More recently I have had the opportunity to be there for my father as he navigates the journey of aging and the health challenges that sometimes accompany this stage of life. Together with my siblings, we have watched our dad overcome cancer, including multiple treatments and recurrences. He is also learning how to live with Parkinson’s disease and I have the honor of helping him navigate this challenging time.
My own family life with 3 kids, two of which are now teenagers, is busy and exciting. Together with my husband Jason, we have weathered the storms of life together, literally, having lost our home here in Houston to flooding 3 times! Life sure throws some curveballs, but we have kept going with perspective, humor, optimism, and love.
